Lying just north of the Thames between Wapping and Poplar, is the former Docklands area of Limehouse. The area was the location of the original Chinatown – between 1880s and the 1960s there were several restaurants serving the local Chinese community. The association lives on in local road names such as Ming Street and Canton Street.
These days the area is perhaps best known for the Limehouse Basin – originally a dock but now a marina and the gateway between to a vast canal system. Alongside the Basin you’ll find the Accumulator Tower which was built in 1869 to assist with unloading cargo by means of hydraulic power. The tower contained a huge weight which would force water through pipes to power cranes and the lock gates.
Located just south of the marina at 44 Narrow Street, is a gastropub run by Gordon Ramsey, formally called ‘The Narrow’ but now known as the Bread Street Kitchen. The building is a former dockmaster’s and customs house and is Grade II listed.
Limehouse DLR station is a short walk to the west of Limehouse Basin with trains to Bank and Tower Hill.
